On the Edge | Vitreous enamel | 91cm x 66cm | 2024
I was commissioned by the National Glass Centre to make a response to a welsh quilt.
I chose ‘Red and White Quilt with Sawtooth Border’, which is in the collection of Jen Jones Welsh Quilts.
As soon as I saw this quilt I was fascinated by the sawtooth edge and its lack of symmetry. A complete contrast to the rigid chequerboard central section.
My work often references the domestic object, and here I have positioned eighteen shapes to describe the edge of the quilt.
The piece is made from vitreous enamel steel, the shapes are waterjet cut from a digital file. Using stencils to block out the white areas, I have enamelled what is left of the surface in red.
The piece is on display in the exhibition ‘Peoples Art’ at the National Glass Centre until 1 December 2024.
